Juliana Luparis was born in 1332 to Shanador and Papusza Luparis in a small cottage within of what is known as the Balkans. The age old story proceeded to be told. Her father, an outsider had the impertinence to woo and elope with his entranced gypsy fiancee beyond the vengeful community he took her from.

For outsiders were feared and hated as the plague, and one tainting the Roma bloodline was almost unthinkable. Juliana was born an outsider, loved but unknowing of the outside world as all she knew was the wide open mountains, brooks and forests that surrounded them for many miles.

Enchanting whispers told to her by her mother were treasured stories, small fragments of the world where people lived. Her father spun bold stories of adventure by firelight, of wizards and things that hunted at night. Of swordfights and dashing heroes, princesses in distress and the simple common folk that got into the most peculiar situations. It was a fine wine, and Juliana drank it in until she was giddy and intoxicated by the lofty ideals of happiness and true love that seemed to exist everywhere in the world.

As the page turned, and time passed in the blink of a sunrise and sunset Juliana grew into a beautiful woman hungry for excitement and adventure, to tell the stories of her people, passed down to her to others.. Unknowing that the simple fact of her tainted heritage was enough to turn Roma society against her and her 'kind'. Her parents had warned her, but such people who turned an evil eye to their own people couldn't exist in a world of wonder and possibilities. So they let her go, because it was stifling her to stay in that cottage in the woods and because they were wise enough to know they couldn't have stopped their daughter if they had forbid her leave.

She found death after her long journey through the network of roads and trails through the landscape. In the towns and villages, flies were thick as paste in the air and the sky was as black as soot. Not even the murders of crows she spied fleeing the place would eat from the corpses. The few left alive were akin to the walking dead, pale with purple blotches over their bodies and faces. Shuffling as if in trances, and dying where they fell in the streets. The reeling horror of the dying town made her turn on a heel and flee from the corpses, and the grim red crosses painted on every door.

Four seasons past outrunning those crosses, scrounging off the land itself for every scrap of food, every drop of water always wondering if she would be the next to fall. She came to have a relationship with the forest, for she had no one else. The stories were fading from her mind, the few weak flames that kept her going through a harsh and bitter winter. She lay dying in a cave, murmuring the last fragments of the story of King Eduard of the forest kingdom, and how he traded three years of his life to free Princess Elaine from the Tower with No Doors when footsteps were heard in the snow.

Small crunches in the snow that brought her back to her sanity. Someone was here.. someone was coming for her, and when the man appeared at the mouth of the cave she sighed and slumped unconscious.

His name was Kale Starshadow, and to Juliana he was her savior. Her life, her world as all the stories were true and her handsome prince had come to end her story with a happily ever after..

And for a time, it was true.
