Quick! Help me think of nice things to say to my father! It's his 50th birthday and my family is making him a sort of memories/advice book, and I have to create a page.

I don't want to make it overly sappy...but not devoid of feeling either! So...what kind of advice does one give a 50 year old man?

Dear Pops,

Don't be silly.

Many Happy Returns of the Day,
James

Pops? ok.. Pops it is..

---
When I was young, you were there to teach me right from wrong, to help me make the right choices in life and get through my formative years more or less in one piece.

Now I'm older and though I'm sure I still have much to learn, I've got a pretty good understanding of the way things are.

So, on your birthday, here's the best piece of advice this young pup can give to the old man.

Pops, have a great birthday, but don't do anything I wouldn't do.

And if you do... don't get caught!!

Love James

Or something like that?

Or do what I did with my dad's 70th and just get him something he'll never forget and skip the big speech. My dad isn't one for big emotional/affirming moments.

It's not a speech dude, James needs to make a page in the book - can't really skip it.

Read the brief!

I decided to go with a limmerick (sp?). It's a nice combination of effort with affection and humor. Then I'll add some pictures. Thanks for the suggestions fellas!

P.S. Frank, I'm too poor to get my dad something he'd love.

Had I seen this thread sooner, I'd have suggested writing a birthday haiku.

As a man grows older and more distinguished,
And Father Time assails him.
He must sometimes ask his son,
For advice when memory fails him.

Eddie B. was one such man,
Chock full of Southern Charm.
Smart, Gregarious, and Athletic,
Though basketball did his knees harm.

At six foot five he was a giant,
A classic bronze Adonis.
The only thing louder than his laugh,
Was when he passed gas upon us.

A daring man was Eddie B.,
His adventures were things of lore.
He’d cry, “Pack the car, steel your nerves!”
To go to the grocery store.

A pious man? Oh Good Lord yes!
At church the first in the pew!
He would never, ever miss a sermon,
Except when he slept in a time or two.

So what advice could one offer,
To a true hero of the ages?
A man who has achieved so much,
Yet still reads the funny pages.

Perhaps no advice can be given,
To one who’s set so high a bar.
The only reasonable thing to say,
Is “Do what you’ve done so far.”

It doesn’t matter how old you get,
Of loneliness never fear.
We’ll love when you go deaf,
From hair growing in your ear.

...still a work in progress...oh and it's full of inside jokes, so it may seem somewhat humorless to some, but it's really stories from my childhood.
